Applying new media technology, I aim to critically review and reconstruct the relationship between society and humans by intervening in urban space / social matters. The methodology of public art projects or the notation of the urban /social space are mainly applied to achieve those ideas.
The urban space we live in has been changing with technologies such as transportation methods and information technologies. Thus, the idea of “ourselves” and the style of communication have also been influenced by new media technologies.
Nowadays, for some people, online communities maintain more spiritually vital value than living space. As a result, with the dramatic change of the urban environment, the role of local communities has become collapsed, and the meaning of “sharing physical space” has gradually been indistinct.
Then, because our social space is divided into physical and information spaces, we are sort of forced to have multiple personalities in both spaces.
Following the notion, “space is a reality that endures” by Maurice Halbwachs, I believe that refiguring contemporary space / urban environment / society is to re-link multi-layered social spaces by applying artistic approaches.
Moreover, the key factor of my projects is to use interactivity and audience participation. By this idea, I have created Relational Dimension and Hidden Structure. In addition, in terms of the notation of urban space, I created The Trace of the Place, Arrow, Flow and Tatazumu and so on.
My project started from the idea of “the cognition of space”. I have tried to visualize my own perspective to a question that how humans percept or recognize the environment surrounding them. The result of these activities can be seen in photo-collage works.
However, these activities have changed from the expression of personal sense to the behavior of people such as behavioral science and group dynamics.
Now, by focusing on the phenomena of urban space and society, I have broaden the viewpoint to explore the characteristic of space and environment.
